Hwæt! LOL! – common formulaic functions in Beowulf and blogs
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider the functions that formulae perform in two types of written texts which maintain close links to oral forms: Old English epic poetry and blogs. Five oralityrelated functions of formulae are identified in both datasets: discourse-structuring, filler, epithetic, gnomic, and tonic. A sixth type of formulaic function, theacronymic, necessarily tied to the written medium, is also found in both datasets.

How do electron localization functions describe π-electron delocalization?
Scalar fields provide an intuitive picture of chemical bonding. In particular, the electron localization function (ELF) has proven to be highly valuable in interpreting a broad range of bonding patterns. The discrimination between enhanced or reduced electron (de)localization within cyclic π-conjugated systems remains, however, challenging for ELF. In order to clearly distinguish between the lo...
متن کاملLoss of H19 Imprinting in Esophageal Cancer1
Recent articles have reported that loss of imprinting (LOI) of the endogenous gene H19 was frequently found in lung cancer and chorio carcinoma, common adulthood cancers. Consequently, we examined the status of genomic imprinting of H19 in 29 esophageal and 48 colorectal cancer specimens, and studied its relation to the expression of H19. Of 12 esophageal cancer specimens heterozygous for the R...
متن کاملFormulaic expressions in language technology
Little attention has been given to the treatment of formulaic expressions in language technology during the past few decades, although such expressions are in fact extremely common both in conversation and in written discourse. ComputerAssisted Translation (CAT) tools are currently the most widely used language technology tools among professional translators. In this paper, I intend to determin...
متن کاملDeveloping EFL Learners' Oral Proficiency through Animation-based Instruction of English Formulaic Sequences
The current pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study attempts, firstly, to probe the effects of teaching formulaic sequences (FSs) on the second or foreign language (L2) learners' oral proficiency improvement and secondly, to examine whether teaching FSs through different resources (i.e. animation vs. text-based readings) have any differentially influential effects in augmenting L2 l...
متن کاملExploring EFL Learners’ Use of Formulaic Sequences in Pragmatically Focused Role-play Tasks
Communicative language use largely entails regular patterns consisting of pre-constructed phrases or sequences. These sequences have been examined by many researchers to find the situation-based formulas which may help L2 learners follow a possibly more target-like speaking system. This study, therefore, explored two categories of formulaic expressions including speech formulas and situation-bo...
